Shoes

Choosing the right cycling shoes affects both your performance and your comfort when riding. Depending on whether you ride road or mountain bikes, you need shoes with a stiff sole for efficient power transfer and enough comfort for long distances. Fit is also crucial; well-fitting shoes support the foot and prevent fatigue and injury. Different closure systems such as Velcro straps, laces or wire closures offer adjustability and ease of use.

ROAD SHOES

Road cycling shoes are known for their very stiff soles, often made of carbon to ensure optimal power transfer. This feature is essential to maximize efficiency on long rides and at high speeds. The shoes' low weight also helps to enhance performance. For a perfect fit, they are often equipped with highly precise, adjustable closure systems such as Boa or ratchet fastenings. In addition, most road shoes are compatible with 3-bolt mounting systems like SPD-SL and Look, providing a firm and secure connection to the pedals. These characteristics make road cycling shoes an excellent choice for ambitious road cyclists who value performance and comfort.

GRAVEL SHOES

Gravel shoes are distinguished by their versatility, combining features of road and MTB shoes to suit a variety of surfaces. Their soles are generally somewhat more flexible than those of road shoes, yet still offer sufficient stiffness for efficient power transfer. For additional comfort on longer rides over mixed terrain, gravel shoes often provide extra padding and a more comfortable fit. Another special feature is the subtle tread on the soles, which makes occasional walking or standing on gravel or shingle easier. This combination of features makes gravel shoes ideal for riders seeking flexibility and comfort on mixed terrain.

MTB SHOES

MTB shoes feature a sole that is less stiff than that of road shoes and often offers some flexibility in the forefoot to allow easier walking on uneven terrain. They are made from durable materials and commonly include additional protection at the toe and heel to shield the foot from impacts and abrasion. Closures typically consist of a combination of Velcro straps and Boa systems, allowing quick adjustments and a secure fit. A particular characteristic of MTB shoes is the often lugged sole, which improves grip when you dismount and walk on varied surfaces. These features make MTB shoes ideal for mountain bikers who ride technical trails and value comfort and protection.

WINTER SHOES

Winter cycling shoes provide excellent insulation with additional thermal lining to keep feet warm even in cold conditions. They are made from waterproof and windproof materials that effectively protect against moisture and cold. The closure systems of these shoes are usually covered to prevent water and cold air from entering, thereby increasing comfort. The soles of winter cycling shoes often feature a rubber coating or a special tread that improves grip on slippery surfaces, ensuring safety and stability in winter weather. These characteristics make winter cycling shoes an indispensable piece of equipment for cyclists who don't want to give up their rides in the cold season.

Did you know...?

When buying cycling shoes online, it's crucial that you are well informed to make the right choice. Learn more about the material, sole stiffness, size and fit so your new shoes perfectly match your needs and riding style.

Key features of cycling shoes

Sole stiffness

One of the main functions of cycling shoes is to transfer pedaling power to the pedals efficiently. Sole stiffness plays a decisive role here. Stiff soles, often made of carbon or reinforced plastic, enable better power transfer without energy loss due to flexing.

Closure system

Cycling shoes come with various closure systems, including hook-and-loop straps, laces, buckles and, more recently, the Boa system (wire closure). All systems are designed to allow you to fine-tune the fit, which increases comfort and improves foot stability.

Pedal compatibility

Cycling shoes must be compatible with the bike's pedals. There are shoes for clipless pedals (SPD, SPD-SL, Look, Time etc.), which provide a secure connection between shoe and pedal, and those for platform pedals, which are used more for leisure rides or in the MTB area.
